Swilly Group partnered with TurfnSurf Lodge and Surf School to deliver this successful outdoors activity programme.  Responding to the growing demand for Surf Instructors (particularly along the Wild Atlantic Way), the programme was delivered in Sligo, Westport and Skerries in North County Dublin. 

The certification offered on the Surf Instructor and Lifeguard (with minibus licence) programme met skills requirements of the employers in this industry sector, identified during the consultation process carried out by the Swilly Group. 

Learners benefited by obtaining the following certified vocational training matching employers’ requirements thus creating real employment opportunities.

Irish Surfing Association (ISA) Surf Coach Level 1 – A CDPI Coaching Ireland Level 1 Basic Instructor Certificate and ISA Level 1 Basic Instructor card was awarded to those who attended the full course and satisfactorily completed the course assessments and log book.  The certificate was awarded by the Irish Surfing Association, with Coaching Ireland accreditation

Royal Life Saving Society Pool (RLSS) National Pool Life Guard Qualification (NPLQ) – The RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the United Kingdom and Ireland.  The RLSS UK NPLQ is not just a qualification it can be a stepping stone into a career within the leisure industry.

Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) National Beach Life Guard (NBLQ) – The National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) in the UK & Ireland is accepted as the standard qualification for Beach Lifeguards.  The NBLQ qualification comprises lifeguard theory, resuscitation, pool and open water work.

Swimming Pool Plant Room Training – A qualified leisure centre manager delivered a one day introductory course on Pool Plant room Operations.

QQI/FETAC Certificate in Occupational First Aid – Training in Occupational First Aid is a necessary qualification when involved in leisure activities.  Having employees with Occupational First Aid Training allows employers to meet their statutory Health and Safety requirements.

Child Protection and Code Of Ethics – This training module is required as Surf Instructor and Lifeguards will be working with groups of children on a regular basis.

Driver CPC Card – The Driver CPC card is a mandatory requirement for professional drivers.  Employers will not employ minibus drivers who do not have a Driver CPC card.

Minibus Driving Licence (category D1) – The Licence Category D1 driving licence is a mandatory requirement for driving minibuses.  Surf Instructors who can transport their customers in a Minibus are very attractive employee to surfing and adventure centres.

The Surf Instructor and Life Guard (with Minibus Licence) programmes achieved over 50% positive employment progression which was one of the highest outcomes achieved by a employment support of this nature.
